Commission announces shortlist for Fair and Ethical Trade city award

Policy | Brussels, 24 May 2018

Following eighteen applications from cities across the European Union, the Evaluation Committee has compiled a shortlist of seven cities for the EU Cities for Fair and Ethical Trade Award.

Launched in December last year, the award was created to celebrate and support the initiatives that are currently taking place in cities that encourage more fair and ethical trade practices.

The short-listed cities, in alphabetical order, are:

  • Dortmund, Germany
  • Ghent, Belgium
  • Lyon, France
  • Madrid, Spain
  • Malmö, Sweden
  • Saarbrücken, Germany
  • Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain

European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, said: “Each of these cities has done positive and innovative work that can encourage others to follow their lead. Through their fair and ethical policies, they have provided valuable insight as to what can be achieved at a local level. In doing so, they are also raising awareness amongst citizens of how their purchasing choices have an effect on both producers and workers in developing countries. From a sizeable field of candidates we have now whittled it down to seven excellent cities. I look forward to announcing the winner on 27 June”.

Trade, if done in the right way, can be a powerful tool to positively impact lives throughout the supply chain. Local authorities can play an important role, both by making sustainable choices as well as creating environments that allow for increased citizen awareness of the impact of their consumption choices.

The Award is an initiative of the European Commission. It is one of the commitments undertaken by the EU Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, under the "Trade for All" strategy, published in 2015.

The project is implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) in cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade (DG Trade).

The Award Winner will be announced at the official award ceremony on 27 June.
