Pakistan has decided against retaliating against the tariffs imposed by the United States under the Donald Trump administration, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb confirmed in an interview with the BBC.
While acknowledging the concerns raised by the tariffs, the finance minister expressed that Pakistan views them as part of the broader uncertainty in international trade dynamics.
“We all need to think about how to move forward in this new world order, and I believe it is essential to engage in dialogue on this matter,” he remarked.
When asked directly if Pakistan plans to respond with countermeasures, Aurangzeb clarified, “No, we do not plan to retaliate.” He emphasized that while the US remains a key strategic partner, Pakistan’s relations with China are also vital for its economic interests.
The comment comes after former US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on several countries, including a 29% tariff on Pakistani exports. However, these tariffs have since been postponed for 90 days, although a minimum tariff of 10% will still apply to all affected countries.
