A recent study shows that suicide is the third leading cause of death for California residents aged ten-to-24. Child psychiatrist Dr. Bela Sood says that half of all mental illnesses start before the age of 14.

By the time adults are 24, 75 percent of mental illnesses are presenting themselves. The Office of Adolescent Health says 30 percent of California high school students have reported feeling depressed. Twelve percent of students aged 12-to-17 have reported massive depressive episodes and 18-percent of high schoolers have considered taking their life. Sood says that a factor in the epidemic is limited access to healthcare.
